Ayurveda for Mental Health

Mental Health

Due to the pandemic Covid –19, there have been mental health crises all around the world. Many people around the world have displayed signs of clinical depression, anxiety, or both since the pandemic started. This pandemic has affected the jobs and economy. Many people were thrown out of jobs. It results in tension, depression, and anxiety. Relying upon chemical-based anti-depressants can cause more deterioration to mental health. However, Ayurveda can offer many remedies and simple changes in lifestyle that can improve your mental health.

Ayurvedic Approach to Mental Health

Ayurveda is a science that acknowledges the mind-body correlation. Its definition of health means to maintain equilibrium among the following:

  • Doshas --- Vata, Pitta and Kapha
  • Digestive Fire
  • Tissues
  • Excretions
  • A blissful state of sense organs, mind, and soul

When all the above are in a perfect balance; the mind is also in a perfect balance. In Ayurveda, there are three cycles and these are Tamas (heaviness), Rajas (activity and restlessness), and Sattva (pure and happy state of mind). All these cycles are very important for us in our day to day life. However, any sort of imbalance in them can affect the mental balance badly. To enhance mental health Sattva must be improved.

Not only attributes but also Doshas are also very important for health regarding mind. Every person’s unique constitution is due to these doshas. These doshas should be balanced to maintain balance and tranquility in mind. Every person is tending to be dominant in one or two doshas. People with Vata-prominence are creative and imaginative; Pitta people are intellectual and motivated and Kapha-dominant people are nurturing and loving. Any sort of imbalance in these doshas not only affects our mind but also our body. Imbalance in Vata leads to restlessness, fear, and anxiety. Imbalance in Pitta leads to anger and irritability and any sort of imbalance in Kapha leads to lethargy and depression.

How to Improve Mental Health with Ayurveda

By consulting an Ayurveda practitioner we can assess our mental wellbeing. Overall dosha imbalances can be corrected with the help of herbs and modifications in lifestyle and nutrition. There are some therapies also with the help of which the doshas can be balanced. These therapies are --- Abhyanga (self-massage) and Shirodhara (pouring warm and medicated oil on the forehead) and Panchkarma (five ways of cleaning the body). Spiritual therapies like prayer, mantras, etc. can also be very helpful.

Health of the mind can be strengthened by boosting immunity and it is correlated with Ojas or vitality. Ojas is the essence of all bodily tissues. Any sort of depletion in Ojas can lead to having a bad effect on mental health.

Ayurvedic Tips to Enhance the Health of the Mind:

  1. Increase Sattva and Practice Self Care: Following are some of the ways to increase Sattva:
    1. Yoga: With the help of yoga postures, according to your dosha, you can balance the doshas and it will give you a lot of mental relaxation.
    2. Pranayama: Nadishodhan (alternate nostril breathing) and deep breathing have a very calming effect.
    3. Follow a Routine: A routine or Dincharya should be followed.
    4. Practice self-care by reading, going outside taking a break from the daily routine can do wonders.
  1. Balancing Agni and Doshas:  Agni is digestive fire and doshas are three attributes on which the entire Ayurveda is based. To bring both mind and body in balance and enhance a sense of contentment and wellbeing it is very important to balance Agni (digestive fire) and Doshas (attributes) in balance.

It is very important to know one’s Prakriti, Vikrati, and other Ayurvedic guidelines for good health that have in it the three pillars of health, nutrition, and sleep.

  1. Try a Cleanse: The ama or toxins build up when the Agni or digestive and metabolic fire is hampered. These toxins can be endogenous, environmental, and psychological. One should take care about anything toxic; be it news, relations, or even food. Such toxic things should be avoided at any cost. Cleansing means getting rid of Ama, restoration of health and wellbeing, and prevention of future recurrence of diseases.
  2. Having a Nourishing Diet: Nourishing diet is very important for the health of the mind. Diet should be taken according to dosha, weather, and area. Some spices and herbs like turmeric, cumin, black pepper, ginger, tulsi, cardamom, and coriander are very important to have in one’s diet.
  3. Get Adequate Sleep: Lack of sleep can impair focus, increase sadness and anxiety and also impact immunity. Therefore it is very important to have adequate sleep.
  4. Maintain a Balanced Lifestyle: To maintain mental health it is important to have harmony between mind and body. You should take time to follow hygiene practices. Such practices help you stay healthy and feel fit.
  5. Physically Distanced – Socially Connected: It has been found that nurturing relationships improves longevity and mental health. This is one of the basic principles of Ayurveda to pay attention to one’s connection with family and community. However, during this Covid era, you need to maintain physical distancing with your friends and relatives, but you should keep in touch with them online.
  6. Do not Over Stimulate Your Senses: Take a break from your daily routine. It will make your mind fresh and make you be more mindful. Many things can help in protecting the health of our mind.

In fact, due to Covid 19, the government of India has suggested a holistic approach with Ayurveda. India is the birthplace of Ayurveda and it is the most reliable system of medicine and can help us in the wellbeing of our mind, body, and soul.
